It’s graduation season at schools all over the country, a time of celebration and reflection as students prepare for their next steps into adulthood. Actor Denzel Washington spoke to the graduating class of New Orleans’ Dillard University and imparted some very important words of wisdom – but it all starts with putting God first. “Number one: Put God first. Put God first in every thing you do. Everything that you think you see in me, everything that I have accomplished, everything that you think I have, and I have a few things, everything that I have is by the grace of God,” Denzel told students.

“That’s amazing,” Glenn said. “So here’s a black man getting up to speak. And he says put God first. And it’s a very uniting message, unless you’re an atheist, but a very uniting message. And not one of hate, but one of love.” Washington also told students to fail big, work hard, and cherish experiences over material possessions.
